Thursday 22nd September 2017 Day 7 – Taking it Easy

Today’s journey has no set schedule so a large part of the group decide to visit an Aussie friend from Singapore who is now living approx 2 hours north from Hambantota in a surf town called Matara. Not long into the journey the heavens open up and it begins raining heavily. The roads are winding and flooding making the roads slippery but fun to drive (except for the overtaking buses!). By the time the rain stops, I am completely soaked but still smiling.

30 minutes later we arrive in convoy at the lunch location.  What a fantastic place right on the beach with open space. The restaurant used to be an old doctors residence where he practiced and saw patience.  It has now been remodeled into a back packers lodge and restaurant but keeping whole existing structure. The owner (Squid) and his wife are expecting us and they have wood oven pizza’s ready on arrival for lunch with cold beers. The restaurant is large enough that we can play a game of backyard cricket with a few local kids. It was a great afternoon’s fun before we head to the hotel in Unawatuna to prepare for the final days driving back into Colombo.
